UN releases $160 million for 12 forgotten crises

The United Nations has released $160 million to keep aid flowing in 12 of the world’s most underfunded crises. Relief chief Tom Fletcher announced the funding on October 2.

“We have 87 million people to reach, and no time to waste,” Fletcher said. He warned that money alone is not enough. Leaders must open roads and borders so aid can reach people.

Most of the money, $150 million, comes from the UN’s Central Emergency Response Fund. Afghanistan, the occupied Palestinian territory and Yemen will each get $18 million. Somalia and Sudan will each get $16 million.

South Sudan will receive $15 million. Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger will each get $10 million. Chad gets $9 million, Cameroon $6 million and Cuba $4 million.

Fletcher said five of the 12 crises sit in places where access is the main problem. These include Afghanistan, Sudan, South Sudan and Yemen. Unlocking access could help 11 million people.

The UN says these emergencies get little attention and even less funding. The new money aims to keep life-saving programmes running through the year.
