Mecca pact panel meets in Riyadh amid Yemen offensive

A committee of the Mecca defence pact between Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan will meet in Riyadh on Monday, October 5. Turkish ministers will attend, the Turkish foreign ministry said on Sunday.
Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Defence Minister Yasar Guler and chief of the general staff General Selcuk Bayraktaroglu will join officials from Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. The meeting is of the pact’s strategic political and defence committee.
The Turkish statement said the talks will cover recent regional developments and the alliance’s institutionalisation. The pact is still being built as a formal structure.
The meeting comes at a tense moment. The leader of Yemen’s Saudi-backed government announced on Sunday a major military operation against the Iran-backed Houthis. The aim is to seize territory under their control.
Pakistan’s foreign minister said on Friday that Iran had suggested engaging the Houthis politically. That idea will be discussed in Riyadh this week.
The session will test how the new alliance handles its first live crisis.
