Storm unearths 1884 shipwreck on Nantucket beach

A powerful weekend storm has uncovered what is believed to be an 1884 shipwreck on a Nantucket beach in Massachusetts.
The nor’easter stripped sand from the south shore near the Point of Breakers, exposing wooden beams that had been buried for more than 140 years.
Jason Graziadei, editor of the Nantucket Current, spotted the fragments on Saturday morning and posted video of them.
Experts believe the remains belong to the Warren Sawyer, a three-masted schooner that ran aground on December 22, 1884. It was sailing from New Orleans to Boston with cotton and scrap iron when a gale blew it off course.
The crew was rescued by lifesavers using a Lyle gun and a breeches buoy system. Pieces of the same wreck surfaced in 2022 and 2023, and researchers concluded they were most likely from the Warren Sawyer.
A state archaeologist said more investigation is needed to confirm the latest find.
