Pakistan’s 50 GW solar imports signal rooftop revolution

Pakistan has imported about 50 GW of Chinese solar panels, in what may be the world’s largest distributed solar boom. The panels are going to rooftops, not big solar farms.
Citizens and businesses are installing the panels themselves. They are bypassing the official grid and its unreliable supply. The trend was flagged in a climate roundup on October 4.
The same pattern is now repeating elsewhere. Nigeria has imported 5 GW of Chinese solar. Yemen has imported 2 GW. Small-scale, citizen-led installation is the common thread.
Cheap Chinese panels are the driver. Prices have fallen so far that households can afford their own power.
The shift could reshape energy access in developing countries. People are getting electricity without waiting for grid projects.
Germany, meanwhile, announced a roadmap to end fossil fuel use by 2045, citing the Hormuz crisis. Volkswagen now sells more EVs than fossil-fuel cars in Germany for the first time.
In Turkey, EVs hit 51.7 percent of new car sales in the first seven months of 2026. Clean tech is scaling faster than most forecasts expected.
