Postal operators around the world have cut their annual greenhouse gas emissions by more than 41% compared with 2008 levels, new figures released for Green Postal Day 2026 show.

Twenty-three postal operators took part in the eighth edition of the initiative, celebrated on September 17. The sector is targeting a 50% cut by 2030.

Operators have already hit their 2030 vehicle-electrification target years early. Today 35% of the postal fleet uses alternative fuels and 28% is fully electric, across a 735,000-vehicle fleet.

About 36% of the electricity used in postal facilities now comes from renewable sources, up from near zero a decade ago.

Germany's Deutsche Post has reached 40,000 electric delivery vehicles, the largest electric postal fleet in a single market, charged at 44,400 charging points using 95% renewable electricity.

The 2026 edition also saw thirteen IPC-member operators launch a Carbon Footprint Calculator for international deliveries. Already 95 million parcels have had their emissions measured.

A survey of 2,500 e-retailers across 19 countries found 70% were satisfied with postal operators' sustainability performance.
