Uttar Pradesh’s deadly rain crisis deepened on Tuesday as the official death toll climbed to 81, with 39 people injured, after record-breaking downpours battered the state through the night.

The India Meteorological Department said the state received 66.5 mm of rain against a normal of 7.6 mm — 775% above normal — pushing 15 rivers above the danger mark. Sitapur reported the highest district toll with seven deaths. Officials said between 1,021 and 2,254 houses were damaged across the affected districts.

Authorities have placed 23 districts on red and yellow alerts and ordered schools shut through September 30. Relief camps have been set up in the worst-hit areas, and state disaster response teams are carrying out rescue and evacuation operations.

Meteorologists blame an active monsoon trough and a low-pressure system for the extreme rainfall. The state government has promised compensation to the families of those killed and aid for damaged homes. The toll has been rising through the day as reports come in from flooded districts.
