The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls has become the centre of India’s biggest political fight, after the opposition INDIA bloc met in Delhi on Wednesday to plan a joint response.

The SIR is an Election Commission exercise to update voter lists, adding eligible new voters and removing ineligible entries such as duplicate names, the deceased and those who have moved. The EC says such revisions are routine and carried out within the statutory framework.

Opposition parties allege the current exercise has led to wrongful deletions and lacks transparency, claiming it could disenfranchise genuine voters ahead of elections. The Congress Working Committee on Tuesday demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, suspension of the SIR and restoration of deleted voters.

The INDIA bloc is also discussing a motion for the CEC’s removal, though opposition leaders acknowledge they do not have the parliamentary numbers to carry it.

The Election Commission has defended its process, maintaining that all decisions follow the law. With the bloc’s meeting concluding without the AAP and DMK, the opposition now faces the challenge of turning its charges into a coordinated campaign.
