Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday said India stands firm as the “First Responder” and “Preferred Security Partner” in the Indian Ocean Region, addressing the second Navy Commanders’ Conference at Nausena Bhawan in New Delhi.

According to a defence ministry release, Singh said Indian warships are now deployed across the South China Sea, the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, reflecting the navy’s growing reach. He also highlighted Operation Urja Suraksha, under which Indian naval vessels escorted LPG tankers through the Strait of Hormuz.

The defence minister said 18 warships are expected to be inducted into the Indian Navy in 2026, strengthening maritime security and India’s ability to respond to crises in the region.

The Navy Commanders’ Conference is the top-level forum where senior naval leadership reviews operational readiness and future plans. Singh’s remarks underline New Delhi’s pitch as the net security provider for the Indian Ocean at a time of rising regional tensions.
