The US Supreme Court on Friday blocked Missouri from using a redrawn congressional map in this year’s midterm elections, ruling that the state must vote under its 2022 districts.

The unsigned decision, with no noted dissents, was the third time the high court rejected the 2025 map. The justices warned that switching maps now would cause “electoral chaos,” noting that absentee ballots had already been mailed to overseas and military voters.

Missouri lawmakers passed the new map last year at President Donald Trump’s urging as part of a nationwide push to draw more Republican-leaning seats. The map targeted Democratic Representative Emanuel Cleaver’s Kansas City district by stretching it into rural Republican areas.

The court criticized Missouri Secretary of State Denny Hoskins for using the disputed map in the August primary despite knowing the risks. It also faulted a federal appeals court for wrongly applying rules against last-minute election changes.

“The 2022 map — not the 2025 map — must be used in the 2026 congressional election,” the justices wrote. The decision ends a yearlong legal battle weeks before Election Day.
