Syria weighs sending troops to Yemen to fight Houthis

Saudi Arabia and Syria are discussing the possible deployment of Syrian troops to Yemen to fight the Iran-aligned Houthi rebels, Axios reported, citing US officials. The talks could lead to between 10,000 and 20,000 Syrian troops joining the counteroffensive against the Houthis. Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa is seriously considering the offer but has not decided, Axios said. The Trump administration was consulted and is not opposed in principle. Reuters reported on Thursday that a US official and a Syrian defence official confirmed Syria is weighing military support. Options range from defensive aid to protect Saudi Arabia to an offensive role alongside Saudi-backed Yemeni troops. But Damascus publicly denied the plan. Syria’s Information Ministry said Syrian forces are not fighting with the Saudi-led coalition and that Syria’s policy is based on peace, not opening new fronts. The ministry reaffirmed firm support for Saudi Arabia’s security. Analysts warn Syrian Sunni troops fighting Shia Houthis could give the war a sectarian dimension and make it harder to end.
