Kenya confirms first imported Ebola case; patient dies

Kenya has confirmed its first imported case of Ebola virus disease, and the patient has died, Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale announced on October 6. The patient was a Kenyan citizen who had lived in the Democratic Republic of Congo for about seven years. He fell ill about a month ago and was treated at several hospitals in the DRC. He then travelled by road to Kampala, Uganda, and boarded Jambojet flight 8523 to Nairobi, arriving on October 3 at 1:10 pm. He was taken to Nairobi Hospital, isolated, and tested positive for the Bundibugyo virus at two national laboratories. He died on the night of October 5. Kenya has identified 28 contacts, including family and health workers, and is tracing 23 passengers and four crew from the flight. The DRC is battling a Bundibugyo outbreak since May, with 7,890 confirmed cases and 3,799 deaths as of September 23, the WHO said. Kenya is the fourth country to report a case. WHO advised against travel or trade restrictions.
