Six bypolls: what we know before October 9 counting

Six bypolls across four states and one Union Territory went to the polls on October 6, and votes will be counted on October 9. Here is what we know so far. Five Assembly seats were contested: Madurantakam and Dharapuram in Tamil Nadu, Nandigram and Rejinagar in West Bengal, and Thattanchavady in Puducherry. The sixth contest was the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat in Assam. Turnout was high everywhere: Madurantakam led at 86.26 per cent, Nandigram recorded 80.89 per cent, and even the lowest, Nagaon, saw 76.20 per cent. The Tamil Nadu seats are a prestige test for actor Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, after two AIADMK MLAs quit to join his party. Nandigram is closely watched after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari vacated it, while Rejinagar saw drama with the detention of AJUP chief Humayun Kabir during polling. In Nagaon, 19.07 lakh voters chose among 15 candidates in a BJP-Congress-AIUDF fight. Results will signal post-May election trends.
