Draconid meteor shower 2026: when and how to watch

The Draconid meteor shower is active from October 6 to 10, and peaks on the night of October 8 into the early hours of October 9. Here is how to watch it. Unlike most meteor showers, the Draconids are best seen in the evening, just after darkness falls, because their radiant point in the constellation Draco stands highest in the early night sky. Look toward the north-west, though meteors can streak across any part of the sky. This year is a good one for viewing: the Moon is almost new, with the new moon on October 10, so the sky will be dark. Expect a modest show of about 5 to 10 meteors per hour under dark skies. The shower comes from debris left by Comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner, which passed closest to the Sun in March 2025. The Draconids are famously unpredictable: they produced spectacular storms in 1933 and 1946, but no outburst is forecast for 2026. Find a dark spot away from city lights and give your eyes 20 minutes to adjust.
