Google opens SynthID Detector to everyone to spot AI media

Google opened its SynthID Detector to everyone globally on October 7, launching a public portal where anyone can check whether an image, video or audio clip carries an AI watermark.

The site supports common formats including JPG, PNG, GIF, MP4, WEBM, WAV and MP3. It can identify watermarks from Google and partners OpenAI, NVIDIA and Kakao, with Apple expected to follow.

Google is explicit about the tool's limits. The site's FAQ states: "This is not a general AI detector." It can only identify media from companies that have adopted SynthID technology.

Since launching SynthID in 2023, Google says it has watermarked more than 180 billion images and videos, along with 240,000 years of audio content. Verification is also built into Search, the Gemini app and Chrome, handling over 1 million requests daily.

An early version of the Detector was introduced in 2025 for media professionals. The global launch follows growing concern over AI-generated misinformation and deepfakes.
