French AI lab Mistral released Mistral Large 4, nicknamed "Le Chonk", in public preview on October 6. The model packs 1.05 trillion parameters, with 49 billion active per token through a mixture-of-experts design.

The model handles more than 160 languages, including every official EU language, and has a context window of 1 million tokens. Native multimodality covers text and images through a 1.6-billion-parameter vision encoder.

Mistral trained the model from scratch over roughly two months on about 3,800 to 4,000 Nvidia Grace Blackwell GPUs inside its own European data centres. The API is live now at 1.36 dollars per million input tokens and 4.18 dollars per million output tokens.

Full open weights will be released on October 27 after a testing period with developers, cybersecurity teams and government partners. Mistral calls it the best open-weights model from the US or Europe on aggregated benchmarks.

Independent evaluators at Artificial Analysis placed it at 38 points on their Intelligence Index, a sharp jump from predecessor Large 3's 9 points.
