California signs AI workplace protection laws

California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a package of laws limiting how artificial intelligence can be used at work.
The headline bill is the No Robo Bosses Act, or SB 947. It bans employers from relying solely on automated systems when firing or disciplining workers. Such decisions must pass human review. It takes effect on July 1, 2027.
SB 951 updates the state’s layoff-notice law. Employers must disclose when job losses are caused in large part by AI, including the roles affected.
AB 1883 bars employers from using AI tools that read workers’ emotional states or collect neural data. Enforcement begins on January 1, 2027.
The measures are described as the first of their kind in the US. They arrive as workplace automation moves from pilots into everyday HR systems.
The package does not ban AI at work. It requires that a human stays in the loop and that workers are told when software shapes decisions about their jobs.
