Sawan Barwal’s marathon silver ends India’s 44-year Asian Games wait
India's Sawan Barwal won the silver medal in the men's marathon at the Asian Games in Nagoya on Saturday, clocking a new national record of 2 hours 11 minutes and 37 seconds. Japan's Ichitaka Yamashita took gold in 2:10:49, while China's Peiyou Feng claimed bronze in 2:12:13.
The silver ended India's 44-year wait for a men's marathon medal at the Asian Games. The last podium finish came in 1982, when Hosur Kukkappa Seetharan won bronze in New Delhi. Barwal also became the first Indian to win an Asian Games marathon medal on foreign soil.
The 28-year-old Army runner from Himachal Pradesh improved his own national record. He had broken Shivnath Singh's 48-year-old mark with 2:11:58 at the Rotterdam Marathon in April. Barwal stayed with the leaders throughout and crossed the line 48 seconds behind the winner.
The medal marks India's fourth at the Asian Games in the men's marathon and a breakthrough for Indian distance running on the continental stage.
