Sinner ends 2026 season with knee injury

World number one Jannik Sinner has ended his 2026 season because of a knee injury and is not expected to return until 2027. The 25-year-old Italian, who has not played since winning Wimbledon in July, announced the decision in a video message on Tuesday. "Me, together with the doctors, have decided that I need a course of treatment for my knee, which means that the 2026 season is officially over," he said. His team said the treatment, for inflammation in the knee, is timed to give him room to recover before 2027 preparations begin. Italian broadcaster Sportmediaset reported the problem is inflammation of a tendon in his right knee, outside the joint, which has troubled him for more than three months. Several specialists advised against surgery, recommending rest and no high-intensity training. Sinner will miss the Vienna and Paris tournaments, the ATP Finals in Turin and the Davis Cup. His top ranking is now at risk, with Alexander Zverev, who won two Grand Slams this year, closing the points gap.
