India women’s 4x400m relay wins historic Asian Games gold

India’s women’s 4x400m relay team has won gold at the Asian Games 2026 — the country’s first athletics gold of the Games.
The quartet of Kiran, Poovamma, Prachi and Vithya delivered when it mattered, according to reports from Aichi-Nagoya on Wednesday. The final was run in front of a packed stadium with India’s supporters in full voice.
The 4x400m relay is one of track and field’s most demanding events: four runners each cover a full lap, and smooth baton exchanges can decide medals. One fumbled handover can undo months of preparation, which is why relay squads train together for years.
India’s women have a proud history in the event at the Asian Games, and this gold continues that tradition at a time when Indian athletics is producing finalists across sprints, jumps and throws.
The victory gives Indian athletics a timely boost, with the track and field programme now underway in full flow. India’s overall medal tally has reached 60, including 10 gold, as of October 1 — and with more athletics finals to come, the contingent will hope this relay triumph sparks further success on the track.
