Neeru Dhanda and Kynan Chenai won India’s first-ever Asian Games gold in the trap mixed team event on Wednesday, setting a new Asian record.

The pair shot 34 in the final in Nagoya after qualifying fourth. The previous Asian record of 30 was held by Qatar and was set only in January this year.

Qatar’s Mohammed Al-Rumaihi and Ray Bassil took silver with 32, while China’s Qi Ying and Sun Yunong claimed bronze with 23.

It was Neeru’s second gold of the Games after her historic individual trap title on Tuesday. She also won silver in the women’s trap team event.

The 26-year-old, a Naib Subedar in the Indian Army, is now the most successful Indian athlete at these Games and India’s first woman trap medallist.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the duo, calling it a memorable achievement for Indian shooting.

Why it matters: the gold took India to nine golds and 56 medals overall, powering the country’s best shooting campaign at the Games.
