Deepak Punia wins bronze, ends 60-year wait in 97kg

Deepak Punia won the bronze medal in the men’s 97kg freestyle wrestling event at the Asian Games on Saturday. He beat Mongolia’s Gankhuyag Ganbaatar 2-1 in the bronze-medal bout.
The medal is India’s first in the men’s 97kg freestyle category in 60 years. The last Indian to win a medal in the class was Bhim Singh, who took bronze at the 1966 edition of the Games.
In the men’s 74kg freestyle, Sagar Jaglan missed out on bronze. He was pinned by three-time world medallist Nurkozha Kaipanov of Kazakhstan within 30 seconds of the bronze-medal bout.
Wrestling has delivered six medals for India at the Aichi-Nagoya Games so far. Aman Sehrawat won gold in the men’s 57kg freestyle earlier on Saturday, defeating North Korea’s Chong Song Han.
Antim Panghal added a silver in the women’s 53kg category after losing her final 1-9 to Japan’s Moe Kiyooka. India now has 84 medals at the Games: 20 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze.
