Alcaraz saves four set points to reach Tokyo quarters

Top seed Carlos Alcaraz fought off four set points on Saturday before beating Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi 7-6(6), 6-1 to reach the Japan Open quarterfinals in Tokyo. The match lasted one hour and 46 minutes.
Alcaraz trailed 6-2 in the first-set tiebreak. He then won six straight points to take the tiebreak 8-6, before racing through the second set by winning the first five games.
In the quarterfinals, the Spaniard will face Canada’s Denis Shapovalov. Shapovalov beat Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 to set up the meeting. Alcaraz has looked sharp all week in Tokyo.
Elsewhere in Tokyo, France’s Arthur Fils upset second seed Frances Tiafoe 6-3, 7-5. Fils struck 10 aces and saved both break points he faced in the 90-minute match. It was one of the biggest wins of his young career.
Czech Jiri Lehecka also advanced in three sets against France’s Ugo Humbert. He will take on Paraguayan qualifier Adolfo Daniel Vallejo in the last eight. Vallejo beat Italy’s Matteo Berrettini earlier in the week.
