IISc’s Mahesh Kakde wins 2026 Ramanujan Prize for maths

Mahesh Kakde, a professor at the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru, has won the 2026 Ramanujan Prize for Young Mathematicians.

The award was announced around the end of September and early October.

It is given jointly by the International Centre for Theoretical Physics and the International Mathematical Union.

Kakde was recognised for his work in algebraic number theory.

His results cover noncommutative Iwasawa theory.

He also worked on the Gross-Stark and Brumer-Stark conjectures.

The prize honours young mathematicians from developing countries.

It carries the name of Srinivasa Ramanujan, the Indian mathematical genius.

Kakde's work solves long-standing problems in pure mathematics.

Experts say his ideas have opened new directions in the field.

The award adds to India's growing list of international honours in mathematics.

Number theory is one of the oldest branches of mathematics. It studies the properties of whole numbers and prime numbers.

Kakde's research connects different areas of algebra. Experts say such connections often lead to breakthroughs.

The Ramanujan Prize has previously gone to young mathematicians from India and other developing nations.
