Mumbai police book CJP leaders, 400 supporters over Shivaji Park rally

Mumbai Police have registered an FIR against organisers of the Cockroach Janata Party protest and 400 to 500 unidentified supporters, officials said on Saturday. The case relates to a demonstration held at Shivaji Park on October 2.

The FIR was filed at the Shivaji Park Police Station under Sections 189 and 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Sections 37(1)(3) and 135 of the Maharashtra Police Act. It names CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke, chief spokesperson Saurav Das, national spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka and Ratna Singh, according to reports.

The protest targeted the Election Commission and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Police say it went ahead despite permission being denied. The complaint was filed by advocate Siddhi Deolekar, a local resident.

BJP leader Pravin Darekar on Sunday dismissed the protest as a “complete failure,” claiming Mumbai’s residents did not respond to it. The CJP has not yet responded publicly to the FIR.

A 75-year-old participant in the rally died on October 2 after complaining of chest pain, according to reports. The Commission has defended the revision exercise as lawful.
