Delhi police detain protesters on second day of voter-roll rallies

Police in New Delhi detained several protesters on Saturday as demonstrations against changes to voter rolls entered a second day. The protests are backed by the Gen Z-led Cockroach Janata Party and opposition groups.
About 100 demonstrators removed security barricades and chanted “vote thief, leave the post” and “Gyanesh Kumar, step down” before police forcibly detained some of them, according to a Reuters witness. Independent MP Kapil Sibal, AISA president Neha Bora and activists Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav were among those present.
On Friday, police had stopped demonstrators from gathering, bundling them into buses, and several metro stations near the protest site were shut. A police source said several of those detained on Friday were later charged with violating orders banning mass gatherings in the capital.
The protesters say the voter-verification exercise benefits Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP and are demanding the resignation of Election Commission chief Gyanesh Kumar. The Commission says the exercise is meant to remove duplicate, deceased or ineligible voters.
On Friday the Commission directed officials to register newly eligible voters and those omitted from electoral rolls. Kumar has not commented on the protests.
