Trump admits ‘bad job’ selling his economic record
US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday he has done “a very bad job” of explaining his economic record, as his approval rating sags under high gasoline prices ahead of November’s midterm elections.
“I’ve done a very bad job of explaining how good the country is doing,” Trump told a Hispanic Heritage Month event at the White House, insisting “the country’s doing better than it has ever done.”
The comment came as he prepares a 32-day campaign blitz for Republican candidates ahead of the November 3 elections, which will decide control of Congress. Trump travels to Texas and Oklahoma on Thursday, Alabama on Friday and Ohio on Saturday.
Voters give him low marks on the economy in polls, which has been buffeted by his global tariff policies and a war on Iran that sent energy prices soaring. US consumer confidence plunged to a near 12-and-a-half-year low in September, the Conference Board said Tuesday.
Republicans are pouring millions into once-safe seats now seen as competitive. “We’re not getting the word out,” Trump said of his economic stewardship.
