The Union Cabinet has approved an Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) worth Rs 1,789 crore for Delhi, according to reports on Wednesday.

An ITMS uses cameras, sensors and software to manage traffic in real time — adjusting signals, detecting violations and easing congestion on busy corridors. Delhi’s roads are among the most crowded in the country, and the system is expected to improve both flow and enforcement.

The approval came alongside other Cabinet decisions, including raising the wheat MSP to Rs 2,610 per quintal for the 2027-28 Rabi season.

For Delhi’s commuters, an intelligent system could mean shorter signal waits, better incident response and automated challans for violations like speeding and red-light jumping. Similar systems in other Indian cities have cut travel times on monitored corridors.

Implementation timelines and the agency that will execute the project were not detailed in the reports available so far. The announcement is part of a wider October 1 package of governance and rule changes taking effect across the capital.
