US nonprofit Sleep in Heavenly Peace has delivered its 400,000th bed to children in need, marking 14 years of volunteer-built beds given free to families.

The milestone bed was delivered by the group’s OH-Cincinnati chapter on August 25, a set of bunk beds for four children. A severe storm knocked out power mid-delivery, adding more than two hours to the job, but the children helped assemble their own bunks by the light of the volunteers’ drills.

Like every bed the nonprofit delivers, the bunks were built by volunteers and came complete with new mattresses, pillows and bedding at no cost to the family, the organisation said.

‘400,000 beds have now been delivered to kids who needed them, all because someone volunteered, donated, started a chapter, or simply decided to help,’ founder Luke Mickelson said.

More than 100,000 children remain on the nonprofit’s nationwide waitlist for a bed.
