US woman sets solo Pacific rowing record, gets Guinness honours

London, Oct 3 — Kelsey Pfendler has received two Guinness World Records for her solo row across the Mid-Pacific, presented on the Jennifer Hudson Show on September 29.
The 32-year-old became the fastest and youngest person to row solo from Monterey, California to O’ahu, Hawaii. She covered 3,776.2 km, or 2,039 nautical miles, in 43 days, 17 hours and 55 minutes.
She sailed from May 21 to July 4 aboard her 24-foot boat Lily. Her time nearly doubled the women’s record of 86 days set by Lia Ditton and beat the men’s mark of 52 days.
Pfendler is the first American woman and the third woman overall to complete the solo crossing. A Grand Canyon river guide, she rowed to raise money for the Whale Foundation, raising more than $30,000 for river guides’ well-being. She rowed in 2.5-hour shifts and slept about two hours a night, desalinating seawater to drink. Her journey drew more than 400,000 followers online.
