Turkiye’s EV Share Hits 51.7% as Adoption Surges

Electric vehicles have taken a record share of new car sales in Turkiye, reaching 51.7 per cent in the first seven months of 2026, driven by the Hormuz crisis and falling prices.

Just three years ago, EVs and hybrids made up only 1 per cent of new car sales in the country. By 2025, that figure had jumped to 22 per cent.

Domestic carmaker Togg leads the market alongside global Chinese EV brands. The speed of the shift has surprised analysts.

High fuel prices linked to the Hormuz crisis pushed more buyers toward electric cars this year. Turkiye imports most of its oil, so pump prices bite hard.

The trend shows how fast transport can change. In the 2020s, electric cars have gone from a niche product to the default choice in market after market.

Turkiye now joins a small group of countries where more than half of new cars sold are electric. The shift cuts both fuel imports and city air pollution.
