A Tennessee farmer’s four-year fight with the IRS is finally over. Wilson Perry Kirby, 76, of Coopertown, says the dispute has been resolved after country music star John Rich stepped in. The saga began in May 2022, when the IRS accidentally sent Kirby a $20,000 refund. The farmer immediately tried to return it and hired an accountant to flag the error. Instead, the agency charged him interest on the money it had wrongly sent. The IRS withheld $1,800 from his tax refund and said he owed about $4,300 in interest. A later letter said $2,575 was due immediately and warned his $930,000 farm could be seized. Kirby spent years seeking help from mayors, governors and senators with no success. After a September 17 NewsChannel 5 report, Rich — recently named by President Trump as Special Envoy for American Landowners — intervened. Rich says the case is fixed and the IRS refunded the $1,800 it had withheld. Kirby said: I’ve cried. I’ve suffered. I prayed. I didn’t think it was ever going to get settled.
