PM Modi hails Asian Games contingent after 85-medal haul

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday praised India's Asian Games contingent after the team finished fourth in the medals table with 85 medals, including 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze. The Games were held in Aichi-Nagoya and closed at Mizuho Park.
In a post on X, Modi said the performances brought immense joy to the nation. He congratulated every athlete, coach and support staff member for their dedication.
The 85-medal tally is India's second-highest at the Asian Games, behind only the 107 won at Hangzhou 2022. India finished behind China, Japan and South Korea in the overall standings.
Athletics and shooting contributed heavily to the medal count, with strong performances also coming from wrestling, boxing and archery. Several young athletes announced themselves on the continental stage.
The Prime Minister said the government would continue to support athletes through its sports schemes. With the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics on the horizon, the Asian Games performance will be seen as an important marker of India's progress.
