October 3: a date of arrests, parties and records

October 3 has seen some dramatic turns in Indian history. On this day in 1957, the Republican Party of India (RPI) was formed, giving a political voice to followers of Dr B. R. Ambedkar. The party went on to play a role in Maharashtra’s politics for decades.
Exactly twenty years later, on October 3, 1977, former prime minister Indira Gandhi was arrested by the Janata Party government. The arrest, ordered by then home minister Charan Singh, became a turning point. Public sympathy after the arrest helped her political comeback, and she returned as prime minister in 1980.
Sports fans remember October 3, 1992, when billiards star Geet Sethi won the World Professional Billiards Championship. The victory made him one of India’s most celebrated cue sport players.
History shows how a single date can carry very different stories. October 3 reminds us that politics, sport and social movements all leave their mark on the calendar.
