Less Exercise May Ease Pain Better, Study Finds

Gentle exercise may relieve pain better than tough workouts, a major new study suggests. Researchers at Adelaide University reviewed 157 studies covering 2,736 trials and over 220,000 people. The findings were published in the journal PAIN Reports. Exercise cut pain by about 1.1 points on a 10-point scale. That is roughly 60 percent more relief than common painkillers give in separate trials. Low-intensity exercise worked better than vigorous workouts. Programmes under 12 weeks beat longer ones. Less than two hours a week was enough to help. Yoga, Pilates and tai chi all showed benefits. Lead researcher Ben Singh said people do not need to push harder to feel better. Senior researcher Carol Maher wants exercise prescribed like medicine. The study did not compare exercise directly against drugs. The researchers now want trials that test exact exercise doses, like doctors prescribe drug doses. Clinics may soon offer exercise as a first-line option.
