Ex-NOAA Staff Rebuild Climate Data Erased by Trump Administration

Former US government scientists have rebuilt a climate data website shut down by the Trump administration. The nonprofit site climate.us restores what was lost.
Climate.gov was the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s portal for climate science. It was shut down last year after thousands of NOAA staff were fired or forced into early retirement. Nearly one million visitors used the site each month.
A team of about 80 volunteer scientists and former NOAA staffers resurrected it. They were led by Rebecca Lindsey, the site’s former managing director and now director of climate.us.
The rebuild was funded with over 321,000 dollars in crowdsourced donations plus support from a major anonymous backer. The new site restores the climate dashboard, which graphs everything from Arctic sea ice to greenhouse gas emissions.
It has also reassembled the site’s 15-year history of climate news, expert blogs, maps and classroom materials. Around 80 scientists have volunteered as subject-matter experts for review.
Lindsey said trusted climate information should not disappear when politics change. The team aims to build an independent platform the world can rely on for climate communication and education.
