Deli Owner Gives Kids $100 for Good Grades

A Staten Island deli owner is turning report cards into cash. Wail Alselwi, known as ‘Island Ock’, rewards students who bring him good grades.
His ‘Grades for Grabs’ programme started in 2023. Students with a 90 per cent-plus average get a $100 bill and their pick of the store.
Those scoring 80 to 90 per cent can take whatever they want from the shelves. Students in the 70s get $10 worth of items.
It began with a friendly bet. Alselwi promised 12-year-old Zameir Davies a milkshake if he improved his grades. Davies made the honour roll.
The idea has gone viral on TikTok. Students now travel from other states, and even Canada, to show Alselwi their report cards.
A GoFundMe to keep the programme running has raised over $575,000 of its $650,000 goal. Alselwi appeared on Fox & Friends Weekend to talk about it.
Alselwi says he misses his own children back in Yemen and treats the students like family.
