New 20 MW Bronx battery to power 20,000 homes at peak hours
NineDot Energy has switched on a 20 MW battery storage site in Hunts Point in the Bronx, its largest project to date.
The company says the installation can power nearly 20,000 homes during peak grid hours. The site is NineDot's largest battery storage project so far. Elected officials and community groups joined NineDot for a ribbon-cutting on September 24, according to the company.
"Hunts Point has historically been overburdened by high-emitting fossil fuels," said Adam Cohen, NineDot's co-founder and chief technology officer. The neighbourhood has recorded asthma-related hospital visits at two to three times the city average, the company said.
As of September, NineDot operates 11 projects totalling 39 MW in New York City and aims to reach 400 MW in operation or development by the end of 2026, according to Clean Energy Skills.
Why it matters: big batteries help the city meet summer demand spikes without firing up polluting peaker plants in vulnerable neighbourhoods.
