Monsoon Exits Madhya Pradesh; Season Ends 13% Below Normal

The southwest monsoon has completed its withdrawal from Madhya Pradesh on October 3, the India Meteorological Department said, as the 2026 season ended with a national rainfall deficit of about 13 per cent.

India received 759.4 mm of rain against a normal of 868.6 mm, or 87.4 per cent of the long-period average. It is the fourth-lowest monsoon rainfall since 2001 and the first deficient season since 2015.

Forecasters have linked the shortfall partly to a strengthening El Nino in the Pacific. The withdrawal line is now moving through the remaining states.

Patchy post-monsoon showers continue in eastern Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and the Northeast. The IMD expects the active spells to ease around October 9 and 10.

Western and central Madhya Pradesh, including Bhopal and Indore, remain clear and warm with cooler nights. The IMD has warned of isolated heavy showers with Mahalaya and Durga Puja approaching.
