Gomti Floods Displace Thousands in Lucknow; Yogi Orders Survey

The Gomti river has flooded large parts of Lucknow, displacing tens of thousands of people even though the city has seen no rain since September 27.
Water has reached Shaheed Path and Gomti Nagar Extension, with severe flooding in Faizullaganj and Mallahi Tola. One report said more than one lakh people in the affected areas had to leave their homes.
Officials blame delayed upstream runoff from heavy rain in Pilibhit, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur and Nepal. The Lucknow Municipal Corporation has deployed more than 70 boats, and SDRF and NDRF teams are evacuating stranded residents. The Gomti riverfront has been shut.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath conducted an aerial survey on Monday and approved an embankment project from Faizullaganj to Naimish. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also discussed the situation with him.
Relief camps have been set up in schools and marriage halls. Families of those who die by drowning or lightning will get Rs 4 lakh in aid.
