Gujarat to put rooftop solar on 15,000 government buildings

Gujarat will install rooftop solar systems on 15,000 more government buildings this financial year, adding about 65 MW of capacity. The plan was announced in Gandhinagar on October 5.
The state has earmarked Rs 314 crore for the programme in 2026-27. Of this, Rs 278 crore is for general government buildings, with the rest for social justice and tribal development buildings.
Climate Change Minister Arjun Modhwadia called it the biggest annual expansion of the scheme. The programme, run by the Gujarat Energy Development Agency since 2011-12, gives full capital-cost support for the installations.
Gujarat had already equipped 6,014 government buildings with rooftop solar by March 2026, with 95 MW of installed capacity. In 2025-26 alone, 1,377 buildings added 17.1 MW.
The expansion aims to cut government offices’ power bills and dependence on conventional electricity. Officials say it also supports the state’s push to raise renewable energy across public infrastructure. The government buildings already equipped with rooftop solar have cut their electricity bills significantly.
