Avengers: Endgame is back on top of the box office. The re-release earned $26 million in North America this weekend. It made another $60 million overseas, according to studio estimates.

The version is called Endgame: Encore. It adds four new scenes to the 2019 blockbuster. Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans also thank fans in an introduction. One scene turns the original ending into a cliffhanger. The scenes tie the story to December's Avengers: Doomsday.

Only two reissues have opened bigger in North America. The 1997 Star Wars re-release made $35.9 million. The 2011 Lion King re-release made $30.2 million. Endgame first earned $2.8 billion in 2019.

It beat new releases starring Robert Pattinson and Brad Pitt. Pattinson's Primetime and Pitt's Heart of the Beast took third and fourth. Zach Cregger's Resident Evil reboot was second with $23.3 million. Context: Studios keep returning old hits to cinemas to fill schedule gaps. The strategy keeps working.
