Navy launches new fleet support ship; chief flags Vikrant concern

The Indian Navy has launched a new fleet support ship, adding to its growing fleet of auxiliary vessels.
The launch comes as the Navy pushes ahead with an ambitious shipbuilding programme, with around 11 ships expected to be launched this year. Three ships built by Hindustan Shipyard were commissioned earlier in 2026.
The Navy chief used the occasion to flag concerns about aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, which has not sailed for four months. He also spoke about the Navy’s role in recent operations involving Pakistan.
Fleet support ships are vital for sustaining naval operations far from shore, carrying fuel, ammunition and supplies to warships at sea.
The Navy says indigenous shipbuilding remains central to its plans for a self-reliant maritime force, with most new vessels being built in Indian yards.
India’s shipyards are currently building dozens of warships and submarines as part of the country’s maritime expansion. The Navy aims to become a fully self-reliant force with a larger fleet by the next decade.
