INS Tarkash, the Indian Navy’s stealth frigate, has arrived at Mombasa port in Kenya for an operational turnaround, officials said on September 29.

The port call is part of the Indian Navy’s regular deployment pattern in the western Indian Ocean, a region where New Delhi has steadily expanded its maritime footprint.

Kenya is a key partner in India’s Indian Ocean outreach, and naval visits have become a visible symbol of the defence and maritime cooperation between the two countries.

During such operational turnarounds, the ship typically replenishes supplies, conducts maintenance and engages with the host navy’s personnel.

The visit also comes amid growing interest from regional navies in joint exercises and maritime security cooperation, as piracy, trafficking and grey-zone activities keep the western Indian Ocean on the strategic map. The Indian Navy’s mission-based deployment posture keeps ships on station across the Indian Ocean Region through the year. Port calls like Mombasa serve both logistics and diplomacy, reinforcing partnerships with littoral states along Africa’s eastern seaboard.
