Maharashtra has set an ambitious target of turning the Pune Economic Region into a $200-220 billion economy by 2036, backed by planned investments of Rs 9-10 lakh crore and 15-20 lakh new jobs.

The master plan was presented to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at a meeting at Sahyadri Guest House in Mumbai on 28 September. It was drawn up under NITI Aayog's Growth Hub initiative.

The roadmap lists 58 priority projects across manufacturing, electric vehicles, engineering, defence, robotics, drones, electronics, semiconductors and biotechnology. It aims to lift Pune's growth rate from 6-6.5 per cent to 10 per cent.

The plan also covers public transport and housing, with proposals for EV hubs, high-tech engineering parks and defence technology centres. It is meant to power Maharashtra's goal of becoming a $5 trillion economy by 2047.

Officials said the first set of projects will be taken up on priority, with clear timelines and a dedicated monitoring unit. Industry groups welcomed the roadmap but said fast land and approval clearances will decide whether the targets are met.
