PM Surya Ghar Crosses 50 Lakh Rooftop Solar Installations

India’s flagship rooftop solar programme, PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, has crossed 50 lakh household installations, making it the world’s largest such scheme.
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy said the programme has commissioned about 14.8 GW of rooftop solar capacity in just over two years since its launch in February 2024. For comparison, only 7.94 lakh installations were completed in the previous ten years.
The pace has accelerated sharply. The scheme is now adding about one lakh households every six days, with installations rising from 5,038 a day in October 2025 to 16,328 a day in July 2026. July alone saw 5.06 lakh households benefit, the highest monthly figure ever.
The government has released Rs 28,024 crore in subsidies directly to beneficiaries through Direct Benefit Transfer. Nearly 19 lakh households now receive zero electricity bills.
More than 12 lakh households earned a combined Rs 421 crore by selling surplus power to the grid in 2024-25, about Rs 3,500 a year per household.
The scheme, with an outlay of Rs 75,021 crore, aims to cover one crore households by March 2027.
