Deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon has fallen to its lowest level in 13 years. Satellite alerts recorded 2,874 square kilometres of forest loss between August 2025 and July 2026. The figure is 36 percent lower than the previous year.

The data comes from Brazil's National Institute for Space Research, known as INPE. Its DETER alert system spots fresh clearing so authorities can respond quickly. The new figure is also 55.6 percent below the average of the previous ten years.

The decline has continued since 2023 under President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. His government has stepped up enforcement against illegal logging and protected Indigenous territories. Brazil has pledged to end illegal deforestation by 2030.

Officials expect the higher-resolution PRODES count later this year. If it confirms the trend, it would be the lowest official figure since monitoring began in 1988. The result matters because the Amazon stores vast amounts of carbon and regulates the climate.
