Illinois honours pond rescue heroes

Champaign police in Illinois have honoured the community members and officers who pulled a 90-year-old driver from a flooded car in a retention pond on August 11. At a ceremony on September 29, three residents who entered the water received Community Lifesaving Awards, while four officers received the Chief's Challenge Coin. The 90-year-old driver attended and thanked the people who helped her reach safety. Ben Busboom-Miller, who smashed a window to reach the driver, told local media he did not hesitate. He pulled her through the back window after the car went into the pond near Prospect Avenue and Marketview Drive. Two AT&T store workers, Jennifer Harmon and Noel Garcia, helped guide him from the bank. Busboom-Miller suffered cuts and needed stitches on his fingers. "If I had the option to do this again in the same situation, I would do it in a split second without another thought," he said. Police praised the rescue as a story of neighbours helping neighbours in a frightening moment.
