US sends 9,000 troops, third carrier toward Middle East

The United States is dispatching roughly 9,000 troops aboard a group of ships to the Middle East, a US official told the Associated Press on Thursday.
The group carries more than 7,000 sailors and 2,000 Marines. It includes the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group with the cruiser USS Chosin, and the USS Makin Island amphibious readiness group with the landing ships USS John P. Murtha and USS Anchorage.
The move could put three US aircraft carriers in the region by the end of October, according to the official. That would take the total American naval presence to more than 20,000 sailors and Marines.
The deployment comes as President Donald Trump warned that new strikes against Iran could be on the horizon. He also said early signs link Iran to the flydubai cockpit attack.
Trump has said the carriers give commanders more options as tensions rise. The Roosevelt left San Diego on September 27.
