US Tells France, Germany to Release Diesel Stocks or Face Export Ban

The United States has warned France and Germany to release 120 million barrels of diesel from their strategic reserves within six months, or face a ban on US diesel exports, Reuters reported on October 1, citing sources.
The move would send the fuel to Europe ahead of a possible Russian energy cutoff. US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the release aims to stabilise Europe’s fuel market.
Diesel prices in the US hit a record $6.39 per gallon this week, according to AAA. The German government said it was reviewing the American request.
The warning comes weeks before the November US midterm elections, as high fuel costs weigh on voters. Analysts say any export ban could tighten global diesel supplies.
Washington has used emergency stock releases before to calm prices. Critics argue the ultimatum risks straining ties with two key European allies.
European officials have not yet responded publicly to the warning.
