US, China agree $30bn tariff relief, AI dialogue after summit

The United States and China ended a three-day summit in Washington on 25 September with an agreement to cut tariffs on $30 billion of non-sensitive goods in each direction. The deal was announced in a White House statement on Friday, according to Reuters-carried reporting.

The two sides also agreed to hold a dialogue on the risks and benefits of artificial intelligence, with the next round set for November, plus a communication channel for AI-related incidents. A White House fact sheet calls the effort the “US-China Super Intelligence Dialogue”.

Under an eight-point consensus, the countries will set up a trade council, called the US-China Board of Trade or Board of Investment, and extend the outcomes of earlier Kuala Lumpur talks. China committed to import at least 10 million metric tons of US coal in 2027 and 2028.

The summit appears to have eased trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies. One fringe fact-check site has disputed whether an agreement was reached, but mainstream wire reporting and the White House fact sheet support the deal’s existence, and officials now turn to putting it into practice.
